Durban - A woman was stabbed to death, in an apparent jealous rage by a messenger at a takeaway outlet in Durban Club Place in the CBD on Monday.

The messenger, who stabbed Zinhle Duma, 35, in the chest and tried to throttle her, tried to kill himself afterwards by stabbing himself in the neck.

It is believed the two had been a couple and that he had suspected her of having an affair.

According to witnesses, he accused her of having an affair and produced a knife and stabbed her. He was taken to Addington Hospital and later transferred to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital.

Duma’s uncle, Sibusiso Duma, said he got a call from a friend telling him of the incident and that a friend and neighbour of his niece had said she got a call from the messenger in which he confessed to the killing and said he would take his own life because he could not face the trial.

“I guess this boy could not handle rejection because my niece had told him many times it was over,” Duma said.

The killing of Zinhle, who worked at a takeaway outlet on the road, has rattled office workers.

Advocate Vishalan Naidu who works in the same building said he knew the woman and was distressed by her death.

“I am extremely shocked and sad,” he said.

Naidu described her as a warm and friendly person who would often greet him when they met.

“The entire building is in shock,” he said.

Police spokesman, Thulani Zwane, said a 37-year-old man was taken to hospital after he tried to kill himself and was under police guard.

“He will be charged with murder and will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon,”he said.
