Brazen gunmen robbed cash-in-transit guards at a Morningside petrol station while a police van was parked in the forecourt.
|||Durban - Brazen gunmen robbed cash-in-transit guards at a Morningside petrol station while a police van was parked in the forecourt on Monday morning.
According to witnesses, the gunmen had been seated in a white Chev van inside the forecourt of the Engen garage in Peter Mokaba (North Ridge) Road.
“The car was reversing and then going forward, trying to avoid other cars entering the petrol bowsers.
“Staff tried to direct the driver towards a bowser unaware of the robbers’ intentions. The car stood idle. The men jumped out the car and walked into the convenience store,” a witness said.
Inside the store, guards were removing cash boxes from a safe when the robbers entered and grabbed them, before walking out on to the forecourt towards their car. Police arrived at the garage as the robbers were walking out the shop.
The robbers turned into Peter Mokoba Road, heading north, but, seemingly realising the police would be on their tail, made a U-turn and drove past the garage losing the police.
The men escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.
Mayville police have opened a case of armed robbery.
