|||Durban – The SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Sunday lauded the life sentences and a further 12 years imprisonment handed to a 56-year-old KwaZulu-Natal man for kidnapping, assaulting, and raping his daughters.
“The sentence meted out to the heartless father should serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of the despicable as well as horrendous and ghastly acts,” Sanco national spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu said.
“It will encourage daughters in similar circumstances to overcome their fears and break the silence, assured that the law will be on their side,” he said.
He urged communities to unite against gender-based violence and intensify protection of vulnerable children.
“Real men and fathers must stand up to be counted against the scourge of rape and say not in our name, enough is enough.”
It was shocking that a man who was supposed to protect his children could do what he did to his own children, Mahlangu said.
According to police, the two victims, aged 21 and 23, were in the Bhuqwini area, Nongoma, when they were raped by their father in October and November 2014.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the victims were afraid to report the matter as their father used to assault them as well, and had at one point throttled the women.
“Eventually, a case of rape, assault, and kidnapping was opened in December 2014 at Nongoma police station for further investigation. Police immediately arrested the accused and he was charged with rape, assault, as well as kidnapping,” Zwane said.
