Durban - Barking at night and causing havoc in Mountain Ridge Road in Westville resulted in death threats being made against a lost dog this week, with Pinetown Pet Rescue’s Nikki Mathios and Lee Bailey both taking a day’s leave to save the animal.

Bailey, who uses the road every morning to take her son to school, said she had been feeding the Labrador-cross she named “Ridge” for about nine weeks when things came to a head this week.

“When I first saw him sitting on a grass patch, I thought he was lost. When I stopped, he just ran away. He was very skittish.

“The next day, I took some bowls of water and food. I started feeding him every morning and afternoon. He still would not let me near him.”

She checked all the missing dog reports, but there was no dogs at large that matched Ridge’s description.

A couple of weeks ago, Matthios joined her in trying to win the dog’s trust, and on Sunday both women spent a few hours sitting with him.

“Last weekend, he started taking food from our hands,” said Matthios.

But he was barking at night and running along the property boundaries, and Bailey said death threats had been made against the dog, including one local motorist saying he would “bring his shotgun”.

On Wednesday, the women managed to get hold of “Ridge” and put him into their car.

He was taken to Shongweni Community Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation, where he is being helped and cared for.
