He saw three young men in his home on Wednesday.
One of five shots fired at Gibbs hit him in the jaw.
It is understood that Gibbs, a cattle farmer, and his staff managed to grab one of the suspects - a 16-year-old - as he fled. He was later arrested.
Gibbs was taken to hospital in Pietermaritzburg. He underwent surgery on Thursday.
Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said the arrested suspect had been taken to hospital “after he was allegedly assaulted by members of the community”.
