Durban - The release of the cash-for-jobs investigation has been postponed for the third time in three months. The report was expected to be released on Friday - after being postponed in February and April.

The Ministerial Task Team, headed by Professor John Volmink, was established to investigate allegations of teacher and principal posts being bought for up to R30 000 in provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal.

The final report is expected to be released within the next two weeks. A date was not announced by the Department of Basic Education.

Basic Education spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, said minister Angie Motshekga had met union leaders and school governing body associations last week where more time was requested for inputs.

“The task team, with the support of the minister, agreed to give stakeholders the opportunity, as requested, to refine their input and response,” he said.

SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) threatened legal action on Thursday, saying its submissions had not been considered by the task team and complained its submissions were only added as annexures to the final report.

School Governing Body Association head, Tim Gordon, said the reasons for delaying the report were understandable because the minister would face legal scrutiny if the report was released with issues not adequately addressed.

“We are convinced the minister is serious about the report and that it will not be swept under the carpet,” he said.

Gavin Davis, the DA spokesperson on education, said the decision not to release the report owing to “Sadtu pressure” was “inexcusable”.
