A Lebanese man who was en route to Dubai was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport when officials discovered over R7 million worth of gold bars in his luggage.
|||Pretoria – A Lebanese man who was en route to Dubai had his travels interrupted by South African Revenue Service (SARS) custom officials at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg when officials discovered he was carrying over R7 million worth of gold bars in his luggage.
The discovery was made on Sunday, SARS spokesman Sandile Memela said.
“The lone traveller was leaving the country without proper documentation. His luggage was scanned and irregular images were identified and a hand search found these to be gold bars estimated at R 7 033 600,” said Memela.
The search revealed 17 rectangular gold bars and three circular bars which weighed 23kg.
The man could only produce self generated invoices for the gold, said Memela.
The man was handed over to members of the South African Police Service.
Sars customs officials “detained the goods for further investigations”.
