A move to fast-tracking new number plates initials to BB for Bokone Bophirima has been stopped, the DA says.
|||Rustenburg – A move to fast-tracking new number plates initials from NW (North West) to BB for Bokone Bophirima has been stopped, the Democratic Alliance in the North West said on Wednesday.
“During a transport portfolio committee meeting, the DA rejected attempts by the ANC to steamroll the process through while undermining constitutional provisions,” Sello Motsoenyane, DA spokesperson on community safety, said.
He said the department of transport had not conducted any form of public consultation and participation on the matter.
“Because of the DA’s objection, the portfolio committee has agreed to start the process at the end of March to allow adequate time for public consultation and participation.”
There has been confusion about the province’s name in recent times.
Provincial government departments refer to the province as Bokone Bophirima, a direct Setswana translation of North West.
In May, premier Supra Mahumapelo reiterated that there were no plans to change the North West name to Bokone Bophirima.
