Johannesburg - Motorists were left frustrated on Wednesday when a heavy downpour caused severe traffic congestions in the city.

Heavy rains lashed the city and its surrounding suburbs on Wednsday afternoon, flooding roads and disrupting traffic lights.

Motorists hooted relentlessly as they struggled to navigate their way through the maze of vehicles. Some, including taxi drivers, used the Rea Vaya bus lanes to avoid the traffic jams.

Traffic was particularly chaotic along the routes leading in and out of the Johannesburg CBD. The M1 South seemed to have been the most affected, with bumper-to-bumper traffic from Marlboro Drive to the city centre.

There was heavy flooding at the M1 South near Braamfontein, according to Traffic SA. This led to heavy traffic build-up between the M1 highway and the Nelson Mandela Bridge linking Braamfontein to the CBD and Newtown.

TWEETING IN THE RAIN

Many road users took to social media networks to vent their frustration. @Nolly_N tweeted: “Traffic in the Joburg CBD is savage guys. SAVAGE!! It’s been 45 minutes and I’m sure we have only made 2 turns. Sigh.”

@MolefeNthabs tweeted: “And then we stuck in traffic at Downtown...”

Other motorists expressed their frustration at the behaviour of fellow drivers breaking traffic rules. “Joburg rain brings out the baddest behaviour even in the nicest drivers. Outchea showing their fangs and dragon scales in traffic,” tweeted @anelemkumla.

South African Weather Service forecaster Wayne Venter said there was no major indication of storms in Johannesburg and Pretoria from Thursday until the weekend.

“There is a 30 percent chance of isolated thundershowers going into the weekend,” he said.
