|||Cape Town - A 15-year-old boy was left brain dead after he was shot in his head in a drive-by shooting.
Keegan Smith died at around 2pm on Sunday when doctors at Groote Schuur Hospital switched off the machines that were keeping him alive.
On Saturday evening Keegan and a friend were on their way to a tuck shop in Surburg Road, Hanover Park, when gangsters in a car randomly opened fire on them.
His friend managed to escape unharmed, but a bullet hit the Grade 9 pupil on the side of his head.
His 16-year-old friend, who did not want to be identified out of fear for his life, said they had been watching movies at his house.
“We left the house to buy something for us while we watched movies,” the boy told the Daily Voice.
He said they were on the way to the shop when they were attacked.
“We are not gangsters, we are school children,” said the frightened teen.
Keegan’s heartbroken mother, Anthea Smit, said she saw her youngest son alive just 30 minutes before.
Smit said she immediately went to look for her son when she heard the gunshots.
Keegan, who was a keen soccer player, was declared brain dead.
“The doctors said there is nothing more they can do for him so they asked us to make a decision,” the mom said .
Captain Frederick van Wyk said the suspect was still at large.
“The motive and cause for the shooting is unknown and it is yet to be determined if the incident was gang-related,” said Van Wyk.
