|||Durban - A hot pursuit early on Tuesday led to police impounding a car that has since been linked to a car hijacking, and also used as a getaway vehicle following several house robberies.
Bolt cutters, balaclavas, spare false number plates, a sledgehammer and a pick-axe blade were among the items found in the vehicle’s boot.
Police spokeswoman, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said officers from the Westville police station spotted a suspicious silver Mercedes Benz with dark tinted windows in the central Westville area.
“As a radio vehicle check was being conducted, the Mercedes sped away from them. They gave chase in their Corsa bakkie, towards Durban,” she said. Gwala said the suspects abandoned the vehicle outside the Umbilo Licensing Bureau.
On closer inspection, police discovered that the Mercedes had been re-sprayed and was linked to a car hijacking in Westville North in April.
The vehicle also matched the description of one that had been involved in several house robberies.
The car and the items found in its boot are expected to examined by fingerprint experts to link the incident to known suspects.
