Durban - Slain ANC activist, Phetheni Ngubane, identified her killer to several people before she died in hospital from multiple gunshot wounds.

This was revealed at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, when a suspect arrested for the horrific double murder of Ngubane, 50, and her friend, another ANC activist, 54-year-old Badedile Tshapha, made a brief appearance.

Imbali resident and ANC member Bonginkosi Shabalala, 40, has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the June 8 shooting.

It is alleged that the women came under fire as they left an ANC branch election meeting in Imbali.

Tshapha died on the scene and Ngubane was critically injured.

She was rushed to hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Initially, three suspects were arrested for the murders, however the Daily News established that charges against the other two suspects were not enrolled due to insufficient evidence, and Shabalala is the only person to be charged.

Prosecutor Patti David told the court that “the deceased person had recognised her shooter” and had identified this person to several witnesses before her death.

David requested an adjournment, revealing that an identity parade still needed to be conducted, and that the safety of witnesses need to be verified.

The case was adjourned to June 22 for a formal bail application.
