|||King William’s Town – Butterworth police have arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 68-year-old man, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.
It was alleged that the dead man was with his 18-year-old daughter at about 8pm on Friday at Jojweni Location, Ndabakazi Village, Butterworth, when the suspect arrived and allegedly demanded money from him, Captain Jackson Manatha said.
“When the deceased told the suspect that he had no money, the suspect drew his knife and stabbed the 68-year-old man on his upper body. The 18-year-old daughter screamed for help and community members came in numbers. The suspect was chased and caught with his knife,” he said.
The alleged killer was handed over to police, along with the knife. He was arrested and charged with murder, Manatha said.
Butterworth police cluster commander Brigadier Stanley Sibhidla praised the community for their assistance.
The dead man was identified as Mlindeli Matshebelele. The alleged killer would appear in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a murder charge, Manatha said.
