People should beware of criminal activities where criminals are using small online ads sites to defraud consumers, police have warned.
|||Johannesburg – A 23-year-old woman appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday for alleged fraud, the police said.
Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said Roxanne van Wyk allegedly defrauded a woman on Gumtree.
“The complain alleged that she saw advert on Gumtree about opportunity to buy and sell nappies from a company known as NKE BABIES. The complainant therefore deposited an amount of R32 735 into the suspect’s account,” Selepe said.
“The complainant started to inquire about her order, it just went vain. The complainant reported the matter to police, after following information the suspect was arrested in Pretoria at Montana.”
Selepe said that the case was postponed for seven days due to several other cases Van Wyk was wanted for.

“On this matter it was fortunate to trace the suspect. In other cases it’s difficult to trace suspects because some other sites does not vet or take identification details from it’s users,” she said.
