|||Johannesburg - A Durban taxi driver and his boss have been arrested after he drove against oncoming traffic, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the 38-year-old taxi driver disobeyed traffic signs by overtaking on barrel lines, putting the lives of his passengers and other road users in danger.
Zwane said the taxi driver drove in an oncoming traffic lane as he tried to avoid the slow moving traffic from his side.
“A police officer from Durban Accident Combating Unit was on his way to work driving along R102 when he noticed a minibus full of 14 passengers in front of him in a congested traffic,” Zwane said.
“The member could not make an immediate arrest but managed to take the registration number of said minibus.”
Zwane said the taxi driver was later arrested after his taxi registration number was circulated and tracked to the Durban Central Business District.
“His minibus was checked and it was found that it was not road worthy. It had defective brakes, seat-belts and [was] leaking oil. His minibus was then suspended from the road,” Zwane said.
“The the taxi driver also had an outstanding amount of more than R10 100 fines which he did not pay.”
Zwane said the owner of a taxi was also traced and arrested regarding the unroadworthiness of his taxi.
“Upon further investigation it appeared that he had a number of warrant of arrest against him for traffic violations and more than R10 200 fines which he did not pay,” Zwane said.
