|||Johannesburg - KwaZulu-Natal police on Thursday urged a student who was raped, allegedly by a police officer in Pietermaritzburg to report the case so the necessary steps could be taken.
“We are committed to dealing firmly with police officers who find themselves guilty of misconduct or crime however, it is impossible to investigate a crime that has not been reported,” acting provincial commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal Major General Bhekinkosi Langa said in a statement.
“Until such time that someone comes forward to report a case, we cannot confirm if such an incident did indeed take place.”
His office expressed their concern that the widely reported claim was not reported to the police.
Students alleged that police officers had raped as well as sexually assaulted a student at the University Kwazulu-Natal on Monday night.
“We acknowledge that a student in Pietermaritzburg did report a case of sexual assault which occurred whilst students were being pushed back by police and the matter is currently receiving attention,” spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said
