A 27-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the rapes of ten victims - including a pregnant woman and two teenagers.
|||Durban - A 27-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the rapes of a child, two teenagers, a pregnant woman as well as another six women, the NPA said on Wednesday.
National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said that Khanyisani Njabulo Ngobese was given three life sentences for raping a six-year-old, a 13-year-old and a woman he raped twice. He was sentenced to 105 years imprisonment of the other seven rapes.
During his reign of terror in Mandeni, Newlands West, Phoenix and Verulam areas of greater Durban, Ngobese would threaten his victims with a knife, rob them of their money and cell phones before raping them. On one occasion he used a gun while on another occasion one of his victims was about to attend the annual reed dance in Nongoma.
Ngobese had denied the rapes, despite there being DNA evidence that linked him to six of his victims.
The Daily News newspaper reported on Wednesday that Ngobese had told the court on Tuesday, during argument delivered in aggravation and mitigation of sentencing that he had grown up without a mother because she had deserted him at a young age.
As a result, he searched for a girlfriend who could give him that motherly love and nurturing, but kept finding the wrong woman.
