A 55-year-old man died in a freak accident when a wall collapsed on top of him in Beverly Street, Westville.
|||Durban – A 55-year-old man died in a freak accident on Friday evening when a wall collapsed on top of him in Beverly Street, Westville, in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.
“It is understood that due to heavy rains in the area the family’s home flooded and they also lost electricity,” ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.
According to bystanders on the scene the man, another adult, and two teenagers went to inspect the wall before it collapsed.
“At this stage it is not clear if they suspected damage to the wall and thus went to investigate. The wall collapsed on the man and pinned him under the rubble and water for some time.
“When paramedics arrived on the scene they found that he showed no signs of life and they initiated CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation]. Sadly, despite the efforts of numerous paramedics on [the] scene they were unable to revive him. ER24 paramedics declared the man dead on the scene.
“It is believed that the other adult and two teenagers manage to free themselves. They were assessed on [the] scene by members of another service,” Vermaak said.
