|||Durban - The South coast has a mystery crocodile and although Ezemvelo are keen to move the animal, canoeists seem happy to share the river with it.
South Coast resident Philippe Touchet photographed canoeists paddling past the crocodile, which appeared to be about two metres long, from the bridge over the Mahlongwa River, not far from Crocworld conservation centre.
“We’ve seen it there three times,” said Touchet’s wife, Susan. “Apparently it has been there for a while.”
Crocworld referred queries to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, whose spokesman, Musa Mntambo, said it could be the same creature reported last year to the eThekwini Municipality, although the Mahlongwa River was some distance away and in the Ugu municipality.
If it is the same reptile, Ezemvelo staff intend taking it to Ezemvelo’s crocodile centre at St Lucia for safety reasons.
The origin of the crocodile is unknown at this stage.
Crocworld’s managing director was not available for comment, but a member of staff confirmed that the centre knew about the Mahlongwa River crocodile.
