Cape Town - A man who was acquitted of Gumtree murder victim Olwyn Cowely’s case has died after an apparent drug overdose at Shetland Street, Westridge, Mitchells Plain on Sunday at 4.30pm.

It’s believed Shawaal Staggie, 30, was using tik when he started vomiting.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut, confirms an inquest docket has been opened in Staggie’s death, while police await autopsy results.

“The cause of death is currently unknown,” Traut says.

Police sources say they believe Staggie, “a known tik addict and an alleged member of the Nice Time Kids gang”, overdosed.

Staggie was laid to rest on Monday in accordance with Muslim rites.

In 2014, Staggie was acquitted of the murder of Olwyn, 21.

Olwyn was shot and killed in 2012 after taking potential buyers of his silver BMW, which he had advertised on Gumtree, for a test drive.

His body was found dumped in bushes at Monwabisi Beach, near Baden Powell Drive.

Staggie, Rameez Felix, Jason Elias, and Soegbudien Abvajee were all arrested, but Staggie was later acquitted.

Only Elias was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 25 years in jail.

Abvajee was sentenced to 15 years for robbery, the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, while Felix was sentenced to three years in jail on charges of theft and the illegal possession of a firearm.
