A suspected robber was shot dead during a shoot-out with police at a busines centre in the Drakensberg region, said KZN police.
|||Johannesburg - A suspected robber was shot dead during a shoot-out with police at a business centre in the Drakensberg region on Tuesday morning, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said the incident occurred at 3am in the Winterton area at the foothills of the Drakensberg mountain.
“The suspects approached the centre where they held up the security guards,” said Zwane
“They assaulted one of the guards while the other managed to escape and alert police to the robbery.”
When officers arrived on the scene they intercepted two suspects who were exiting the business centre.
Zwane said the two men fired at police who then returned fire.
“One of the suspects was subsequently shot dead while the other fled into the nearby bushes.”
Police seized an unlicensed firearm and a vehicle used in the robbery.
Zwane said the vehicle was hijacked in Malvern in October last year.
“A search for the second suspect is still underway. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) were also informed of the incident,”Zwane said.
