Cape Town - A man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death in a fit of rage has died in police cells, after he too was knifed in an ensuing mob justice attack.

The man was treated on the scene by paramedics who gave police the “OK” to arrest him.

After his arrest, he was taken to the Paarl police station, where officers found his lifeless body in a police holding cell on Tuesday morning.

Residents of the Nkanini informal settlement in Mbekweni claim the man attacked his girlfriend, mom of one, Nokubonga Matyusi, 28, on Monday afternoon.

The couple were drinking when the man, believed to be in his 30s, allegedly accused her of stealing his new takkies.

A community member who asked to remain anonymous said: “Next thing we know, she comes out running and hides in one of the shacks, but he came in after her and dragged her out.

“He kept stabbing her in the back and on her stomach and even tried to slice her neck open.

“We screamed for him to stop, but he kept on going.

“Once she went still, he dropped the knife and walked away, but he didn’t get far because residents caught him and gave him a good hiding before calling the cops.”

Nokubonga’s shocked mother Fezeka Jas, 45, said she will now have to raise her 7-year-old grandchild.

“I’m very hurt over the way my daughter died – he was butchering her in front of people like an animal,” said her heartbroken mom.

“We heard he had died in police cells, [but] his death doesn’t mean justice has been served for my daughter, nor will it bring her back.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said: “A suspect who was arrested on a charge of murder has succumbed in police custody, due to possible injuries he sustained after he was allegedly assaulted by community members.”

Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s spokesperson Robbie Raburabu confirms they are investigating the matter.
