An alleged drug mule, who had travelled through two countries where drug trafficking carries a death sentence, was arrested at OR Tambo with tik worth over R1 million.
|||Pretoria - Members of the police’s K-9 dog unit based at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday night arrested an alleged drug mule after she was found in possession of crystal methamphetamine worth over R1 million.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the 26-year-old woman was caught shortly after she landed at the airport from Dubai.
“Her movements reflect that she left the country for Thailand on 21 March 2016 and returned yesterday (Wednesday),” he said.
“Members of the ORTIA K9 unit found the drugs hidden in a false compartment of her luggage during a routine search. She is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court next Tuesday to face a charge of dealing in drugs.”
Thailand and the United Arab Emirates routinely sentence drug traffickers to death.
According to police she is the third person to have been caught by law enforcement authorities at the airport in the past five days. At the weekend, customs officials caught another woman for possession of drugs after she was found in possession of 32.5 kilogrammes of crystal meth. Charlotte Senzeni Molefe, 47, had since appeared in court where her case was postponed to April 6 for a bail application.
A day later, members of the same K9 unit at ORTIA arrested a 29-year-old man, Adan Mahammed Hussein, travelling on a Norwegian passport after they found him in possession of Khat to the value of R51 000.
“The suspect’s passport indicates that he just flew into the country three days earlier. The suspect was arrested on 21 March 2016 as he was about to board a Zurich-bound plane,” Naidoo said. “He appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Wednesday) and he is re-appearing today (Thursday).”
