A Cape Town man has been arrested for alleggedly stabbing his girlfriend of eight years to death before turning the knife on himself.
|||Cape Town - Police arrested a 35-year-old man for the murder of his girlfriend in Lusaka, an informal settlement in Nyanga, on Friday evening.
He allegedly stabbed Nontembiso Qum, his girlfriend for the past eight years, several times before turning the knife on himself.
The suspect’s sister said she witnessed the murder
She said the suspect “went into a trance and savagely stabbed her while she was asleep next to him at the time
“.
“He looked possessed, as if something had taken him over. I also feared for my life,” she said.
Relatives expressed shock on Saturday.
They said the couple had been “very much in love”.
They also described the suspect as a softly spoken teetotaller who had not been able to explain what happened on Friday night.
Police spokeswoman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the arrest and incident, saying the said the suspect would appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
According to Rwexana, the suspect turned the knife on himself and is under police guard at a nearby hospital as he recovers from his wounds.
Community leader Nophumzile Ntetha said the incident was perplexing.
“He’s such a sweet and softly spoken man who never bothered any one in the community. We all want to know what it was that could have possessed him allegedly to do such a horrendous thing.
“On the day of the incident he had just come back from visiting his family in Gugulethu and they seemed happy and everything was normal,” she said.
