|||Durban - Police have arrested two suspects after a woman was killed in a shoot-out with police at the Wema hostel near Lamontville.
The shoot-out ensued during a police crackdown at the hostel on Sunday night.
One of the suspects was wounded and the girlfriend of one of the suspects was shot. She died later in hospital, police said.
Both suspects have since been arrested.
The crackdown was led by the KwaZulu-Natal Crime Intelligence Unit and the Umhlali K9 Unit after police received a tip-off that unlicensed firearms were being kept at the hostel.
The hostel is not far from uMlazi’s notorious Glebelands.
KZN police spokesman, Major Shooz Magudulela, said when police approached the suspects’ hostel rooms they heard guns being cocked before the shoot-out.
“The suspect’s girlfriend that was in the house sustained injuries and was taken to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries,” said Magudulela.
He said police recovered an AK-47 rifle, two pistols and 64 live rounds of ammunition.
The suspects have been charged with attempted murder, pointing of a firearm, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of live ammunition.
Meanwhile, Kwazulu-Natal Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu and KZN police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni have praised the police for recovering the ammunition and firearms from the suspects.
A spokesman for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) could not be reached for comment to confirm if Ipid was investigating the woman’s death.
