|||Cape Town – The family of American rapper Yasiin Bey, also known as Mos Def, are to launch an application in the Western Cape High Court next Friday, to remain in the country, pending the outcome of his criminal case.
The family was to have launched the application on Wednesday, but this did not materialise.
Their lawyer, Shaheed Schreuder, said a number of issues had cropped up, preventing the matter from being placed on the High Court roll for Wednesday.
Instead, a postponement to February 26 was granted by a judge in chambers.
Mos Def, real name Dante Terrell Smith, has been granted a temporary reprieve.
He is currently out on bail for allegedly transgressing immigration regulations.
The family of six was given two weeks to leave, but made an urgent application in the Western Cape High Court to be allowed to stay.
Mos Def was arrested at the Cape Town International Airport last month. He had entered South Africa on a US passport, but produced an unrecognised “world passport” when he tried to leave and was arrested.
Mos Def is expected back in court, in the criminal case, on March 8.
