Johannesburg - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters appeared on Monday night's episode of Muvhango to address the road carnage over the Easter holidays.

She urged all motorists to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.

The minister encouraged them to always buckle up, to drive safely, not to use cell phones while driving and most importantly not to speed as they will get arrested and will be expected to pay hefty fines.

According to the Minister the most fatalities on our roads are pedestrians. “They get drunk and walk on the road, some of them use cell phones, especially the youth,” she said.

Peters also touched on the AARTO law (Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences) which is mainly focused on licensing. “The purpose of a driver’s license is to allow you to drive and not to kill people,” she said.

In 2014 the number of fatalities on South African roads during the Easter holidays reached 193 and in 2015 it escalated to 287.
