Durban - The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Weziwe Thusi, and the SAPS gatecrashed pupils’ break-up parties around Durban on Friday warning them about drug use.

Schools closed yesterday for the end of the third term.

“Today we are here because it is break-up day and we know young kids are going to parties.

“Some of them are going home with their report cards. But some of them have already changed out of their uniforms and have said they are going to parties. Some of them looked high already,” Thusi said.

One of them said there was going to be a party at the Blue Lagoon. “We are going to be visiting with the police,” said Thusi, pictured.

Some of the other places the MEC visited included Reunion Park, Dakota Beach in Isipingo, and the Mega City Mall, uMlazi.

“We invite the community to join us in the fight against substance abuse. We urge parents to look after their children because they are the future of the country,” she said.

Thusi said drug and alcohol abuse was rife in KwaZulu-Natal. “We’ve had two young kids die in KwaMashu and 27 admitted to hospital. We’ve had meetings with parents. We must work together to rid the province of this scourge.”
